open to everyone
We are happy to offer marriages or commitment ceremonies to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation and background. We believe God blesses all marriages where faithfulness, respect, justice, and love are found and honoured.
a sacred occasion
We say that these services are beautiful and sacred because they recognize that love itself is a sacred and beautiful thing. They strive to embody what God wants our love to look like: love that is just, vulnerable, compassionate and faithful.
arranging a date
Couples may make an initial inquiry by contacting the Church Office by phone or email. The booking will be finalized after you have met with the Minister and made a $100 non-refundable deposit.
The Administrative Coordinator will help you arrange a meeting with the Minister and coordinate the wedding service.
Our job is to make sure you can show up on your special day and have nothing to worry about other than getting married. At the rehearsal we will go through the entire service and answer any questions you may have. Everyone who is involved in the ceremony is encouraged to attend.
Because we believe this to be a sacred and important decision, we require you to take a course that can provide the skills to help you have a more satisfying relationship. These classes can help alleviate issues related to finances, sex, children, leisure time, roles, and the division of power and responsibility that are often key sources of conflict. The majority of couples find them to be very helpful.
We recommend the United Church’s Marriage Preparation Course at Knox United Church. For more information, visit Knox’s website. You may also take a counselling course at a location convenient for you. Upon completion of a Marriage Preparation Course, please submit a certificate or letter to the Church office.
A Marriage License is required for all weddings. It is your responsibility to provide the license to the Church Office no later than one week prior to the wedding. It can be purchased at any Alberta Registry Office. Two witnesses are required to sign the legal documents during the wedding ceremony and they must be at least 18 years of age.
The wedding assistant is available for consultation and direction on specific requests by the bridal party for decorations based on what is approved by the Church. The wedding assistant will be available on the day of the rehearsal one hour before and after the rehearsal time. For the wedding day, the assistant will arrive one hour before and one to one and a half hours after the conclusion of the ceremony.
flowers and decorating
How you want to decorate the sanctuary is up to you. Our Wedding Assistant will be happy to provide direction in this area. Don’t feel you need to decorate too much; many couples like our sanctuary left just as it is. It is your responsibility to remove all decorations after the ceremony. Rituals can be a beautiful way to symbolize your love, story, and commitment. Feel free to bring any ideas when you meet with the Minister.
We know you want to have special pictures of this important day. We simply ask that your photographer respect the ceremony and not be a distraction. We trust we can work together to give you the best ceremony possible.
Music can be a big part of your ceremony. Pick songs that reflect your personalities, your story, and the love you share. While you can hire your own musicians, or use your own digital music, you can also hire our Worship Music Director. This can be discussed when you meet with the Minister.
A $100 non-refundable deposit is to be made separately after your first meeting with the Minister and will be deducted from the overall cost. The Church Administrator will discuss the fees specific to your wedding service. All may be looked after in one cheque made payable to Red Deer Lake United Church. Prices are subject to change.
