open to everyone

As an Affirming church we are happy to offer marriages or commitment ceremonies to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation and background. We believe God blesses all marriages where faithfulness, respect, justice, and love are found and honoured.

a sacred occasion

We say that these services are beautiful and sacred because they recognize that love itself is a sacred and beautiful thing. They strive to embody what God wants our love to look like: love that is just, vulnerable, compassionate and faithful.

arranging a date

Couples may make an initial inquiry by contacting the Church Office by phone or email. The booking will be finalized after you meet with the Minister and make a $100 non-refundable deposit.

The church office will help you arrange a meeting with the Minister and coordinate the wedding service.

rehearsal

Our job is to make sure you can show up on your special day and have nothing to worry about other than getting married. At the rehearsal we will go through the entire service and answer any questions you may have. Everyone who is involved in the ceremony is encouraged to attend.

preparation

Because we believe this to be a sacred and important decision, we suggest that you take a course that can provide the skills to help you have a more satisfying relationship. These classes can help alleviate issues related to finances, sex, children, leisure time, roles, and the division of power and responsibility that are often key sources of conflict. The majority of couples find them to be very helpful.

Although, it’s not a requirement, we recommend the United Church’s Marriage Preparation Course at Knox United Church. For more information, visit Knox’s website. You may also take a counselling course at a location convenient for you. Upon completion of a Marriage Preparation Course, please submit a certificate or letter to the Church office.

marriage license

A Marriage License is required for all weddings. It is your responsibility to provide the license to the Church Office no later than one week prior to the wedding. It can be purchased at any Alberta Registry Office. Two witnesses are required to sign the legal documents during the wedding ceremony and they must be at least 18 years of age.

the ceremony and reception

If you choose to have your ceremony and reception here, we have beautiful spaces to accommodate your needs. We can discuss this at one of the meetings we will have with you as we plan the service.

flowers and decorating

How you want to decorate is up to you. Don’t feel you need to decorate too much; many couples like our facilities left just as is. It is your responsibility to remove all decorations after the ceremony.

Rituals can be a beautiful way to symbolize your love, story, and commitment. Feel free to bring any ideas when you meet with the Minister.
