open to everyone
We are happy to marry all couples, regardless of sexual orientation and background. We believe God blesses all marriage where monogamy, faithfulness, respect and love are found and honoured.
a sacred occasion
A wedding is a sacred thing as it is two people coming together before God and their friends and family vowing to love each other and build a life together. It's a way of life that we believe captures what God wants our relationships to look like: ones that are uplifting, honouring, and loving.
Our minister will work with you to keep this aspect of marriage present, while still creating the style of wedding (traditional, contemporary, etc) you want.
arranging a date
An initial wedding inquiry can be made by contacting the Church Office by phone or email.
The booking will only be finalized after the couple has met with the minister and has made a $100 non-refundable deposit.
The Church Administrator will assist the couple in the coordination of the wedding service and the various options will be explained.
You are, of course, more than welcome to share any ideas or suggestions you may have for your wedding with the Minister.
A rehearsal before the wedding service is important and is booked at the same time as the wedding date. The wedding party, including ushers and parents, are encouraged to attend. The rehearsal time is one hour and includes any Sanctuary/Chapel set up prior to the wedding day.
Because we believe this to be a sacred and important decision, we ask that all couples partake in a per-marital course which can help you invest in skills that will help you have a more satisfying marriage. Issues such as finances, children, leisure time, roles and the division of power and responsibility are often key sources of conflict these classes can help ameliorate. The majority of couples experience these to be very helpful.
We recommend the United Church's Calgary Presbytery Marriage Preparation Seminars. For more information on it, call 403-294-0378 or visit www.pastoralcareunited.ca. You may also take a counseling course at a location convenient for you. Upon completion of a Marriage Preparation Course, a certificate or letter is to be submitted to the Church Office.
A Marriage License is required for all weddings. It is the responsibility of the couple to provide the license to the Church Office no later than one month prior to the wedding. It can be purchased at any Alberta Registry Office.
Two witness are required to sign the legal document during the wedding ceremony and they must be at least 18 years of age.
The wedding assistant is available for consultation and direction on specific requests by the bridal party for decorations based on what is approved by the Church. The wedding assistant will be available on the day of the rehearsal one hour before and after the rehearsal time. For the wedding day, the assistant will arrive one hour before and one to one and a half hours after the conclusion of the ceremony.
flowers and decorating
Flowers and decorating are your responsibility and the Wedding Hostess is available to give direction in this area. It is the responsibility of the family to remove the flowers and clean the sanctuary or chapel of decorations after the wedding.
A Unity Candle or Sand is also an option, one that often involves family members. These options, along with any special music, readings, etc., can be discussed when meeting with the Minister.
We know you want to have special pictures of this important day. We simply ask that your photographer respect the ceremony and not be a distraction. We trust we can work together to give you the best ceremony possible.
The RDLUC Music Director may be hired as the pianist and/or soloist. She can provide assistance in music selections to be played at your wedding. An initial meeting with her should be scheduled three months prior to the wedding date to ensure availability. The Music Director can be contacted through the Church Office.
You may also provide your own musician(s). It is also possible to have recorded music during the service. We ask that any recorded music be submitted to the Church Office no later than one week prior to the wedding to ensure everything will work and sound great.
A $100 non-refundable deposit is to be made separately after your first meeting with the Minister and will be deducted from the overall cost. The Church Administrator will discuss the fees specific to your wedding service. All may be looked after in one cheque made payable to Red Deer Lake United Church. Prices are subject to change.
